IGS Speed Test

The purpose of this page is to allow an IGS customer to test the throughput of their connection. Because we have to rely on the results provided by the browsers on customers' computers, which are not professional measuring devices, this test should only be considered an approximation of the actual throughput.

Please note that modem connections vary in speed. Many modems will connect at a high rate, but reduce speed when they encounter errors (which are normal on an analog phone line). Even though the modem may have reduced speed there is usually no way of telling that it has done so.

To perform this test, simply click on HTTP or FTP below for the correct size of file. (Note that the files are non-compressible junk files that can be deleted after you receive them.) During and at the end of the file transfer, the browser will report the transfer rate in K/sec (kilobytes per second). 90 K/sec or higher is excellent for a 1-meg-modem connection, while 3 K/sec or higher is a good result with an analog modem.

Remember this test only gives you an approximation of your throughput. If the result seems low, try a couple of more times at different times of day, and try the test just after resetting your computer. There are many possible reasons for poor performance. Your computer may be underpowered (i.e. not enough memory, slow CPU, many background programs loaded, etc), you may have bad phones or too many devices on your phone line (remove all phones and devices reset your high speed modem and try again) You may also have a bad phone line call us to have it tested 1-800-268-3715 EXT: 5
