True Blue Nova Scotians

These photos were taken in Bedford, Nova Scotia in May 2008 - all are live lobsters and crabs.  Although I was born and brought up in the Halifax area, I'd never heard of a blue lobster before and was absolutely thrilled to see one.  Nesting on top of a bed of crabs (for my photo opportunity only) the lobster looked no different than the others in the tank next to the crabs except for his bright blue color.

According to my internet search for more information on this exquisite creature, only one in two million lobsters are blue in color.  Scientists blame this on a genetic defect that causes the lobster to produce an excessive amount of protein.

Apparently the yellow lobster at left, is even rarer with only one in 30 million live lobsters being yellow in color. But it was the blue lobster that caught my eye as its color was so vastly different from the norm.

To see these crustaceans up close and personal was the highlight of my trip 'home' and with the 'pictures to prove it' I'm sure many conversations will be held - particularly amongst the 'down homers' living in our area.
