If you wish to attract butterflies to your yard you should construct a place for the butterflies to rest.

I have provided plans for constructing a butterfly box. If you do build a box from my plans please send me E-mail telling me where you live and how many boxes you have built. See the bottom of this page for my E-mail address.

The butterfly box should be made with rough lumber on the inside so the butterflies have an easy time crawling around the box. I was fortunate enough to find some old well-weathered cedar fence boards to use in building my butterfly box. After building the box place a few twigs and leaves inside the box fotr the butterflies.

I also modified the plans by screwing all the four sides to the top and bottom.

I also created a butterfly garden with many plants butterflies like, a few rocks for the butterflies to warm themselves on, a mud platter that is kept damp and lightly sprinkled with Epsoms salts to provide the salts they like, and a gazing ball because butterflies are narcissistic.
